Yard Sale Map!

Hey Neighbors & Visitors,

Here is an active map of the sales that will be happening in East Missoula Saturday (Sept 11th) and Sunday (Sept 12th). You may have to download the Yard Sale Treasure Map application to get the most out of this map, but you should be able to access it on Google Maps, if you’d rather not. If you’re in need a paper map please visit our friends at Habitat Restore on Hwy 200 (across from the Reno Cafe). We will post one on the door for you to take a photo of, with your phone. We also hope to have a list of addresses for all of the participants to share with treasure hunters at each of the addresses on the map.

If you’re tooling about East Missoula looking for sales, look for the infamous EMU. And, if you’re simply looking for a list of participants you’ll find it below.

We hope to make this an annual event and would love to have help with advertising and organizing next year. Would you like to be on the committee? Contact us if you are interested.

Happy Treasure Hunting!

Feel free to print me for your home made yard sale sign.

Call To Art

We want to share your art with our neighbors. We’re looking for artists ages 0-17 that would like to draw, paint, photograph, (all mediums welcome) what “My Neighborhood – East Missoula” means to them.

artist unknown

Art submissions are due by 10pm on August 18th (if you need to sneak one in on the morning of August 19th, we won’t turn you away) and will be displayed at 7pm on August 19th. We are accepting submissions at Habitat Restore in East Missoula, or electronically via email at [email protected] or in Facebook messenger. Please notify us at 406-686-2288 if you’re unable to submit your pieces, any of these three ways, and we’ll arrange for pickup.

If you are in need of some art supplies to complete your piece please let us know, we have some available. You can call the number above or use our contact form and we’ll prepare some supplies for you to pick up at Habitat Restore.

We will share your artwork on our Facebook page (if permitted) as well as have it on display at Mount Jumbo School and Lion’s Park in East Missoula. The art event will be held on Thursday, August 19th at 7pm. This is the night of our monthly neighborhood walk event. We will share some light refreshments (cookies and lemonade) while we peruse the talents our our neighborhood artists.

Please keep your art submissions to no bigger than 12″x9″ – so we can put them in a protective cover for the event. If you are sharing your submission electronically, this isn’t a concern.

Please be sure your first name, last initial and age are with your submission. We want to give credit where credit is due.

We look forward to seeing your creativity and celebrating your submissions! Tell your neighbors and friends!

Earth Day Deets

This is where you’ll find a complete list of items we can and absolutely cannot accept at our event. Message us if you have any further questions.

When:

In an effort to make the days run more smoothly our event will only be open from 12pm-5pm on Saturday and Sunday. We cannot accept anything outside of these hours.

What we can take off your hands:

Here is what we WILL and WON’T take: We’ll have a metal recycling bin from Pacific Recycling available, but the bin is strictly for the items listed in the document below. We cannot take your entire car, so please arrange for pick up of that elsewhere. Montana Public Radio has a program where they’ll pick up your vehicles, so reach out to them for more details.

Recycling Details:

We cannot recycle any containers that are closed, the pressure within can be very dangerous. Please read the detailed document above to learn what we can accept.

If you have cardboard or paper you’d like to recycle please visit Pacific Recycling, they have bins outside (*always open*) for the public to recycle.

Garbage Details:

We will have TWO 20 yard dumpsters on site at Burnich. We want to fill them up, but once they are full, we cannot take anything else. So, bring us your garbage!

Acceptable Garbage

Yard Waste:

We encourage you to take your organic yard waste to Garden City Compost. We can give you further directions at Burnich, if you happen to pull through the lot. Review their website to see what they accept. We will have a very limited number of passes available to Garden City Compost if you’ve got yard waste to drop off. If you’d like to donate a trailer to our event to collect waste, please contact us.

Hazardous Waste:

We cannot accept hazardous waste. Please visit the Missoula County Health Department for details on their next Haz Waste Day. They will have one in the fall of 2021. Dates coming soon.

Drive-in Directions:

Map for Entry

You MUST enter the parking lot from Minnesota Avenue, NOT Hwy 200. We cannot create a hazard in the middle of that busy highway, so please enter using the map below.

Why?

This is for you, for our neighbors. We have sponsors to thank for helping us provide this ‘free to you’ service. We want you to take advantage of this opportunity to save on dump fees, to connect with this new neighborhood organization (East Missoula United) and to chat with other neighbors emerging from hibernation after a long winter. The events we hold are to connect us to one another.

Please reach out if you or a neighbor need help. We’d appreciate knowing in advance, so we can try and find volunteers to be where we need them on the 24th & 25th. On that note, if you want to be a volunteer, we need you! We need all of the help we can get. We’ll feed you donuts.

Volunteers Needed!

Our Earth Day Clean-Up Event is right around the corner and we need helpers. It’s the best time of year to get out in the sun, roam the streets, clean up a bit and chat with neighbors.

If you’re interested in being a neighborhood walker, or being on-site at Burnich to help direct traffic and sort through car loads we need you!!

Please reach out if this event interests you or you know of someone that might want to help. AND, please reach out if you (or a neighbor) are in need of clean-up help and you live in East Missoula.

Happy Spring!

Shoveling Need

Call to Action!

Hey East Missoula Friends/Neighbors,

We need your help. Do you like shoveling? Do you have a snowplow and love putting it to use?

We have a friend in our neighborhood, with a disability, who would like to be able to reach out to our community to get their property shoveled when/if we have a snowstorm. We probably have many other neighbors with this need as well.

This request has prompted us to form a new list of people to call upon when the need arises. If you’d like to be on this snow-removal list please send us a message or give us a call at 406-686-2288. We’ll need your phone number too, in case we need to contact you quickly, in emergency situations.

Thank you! We appreciate you! If you’d like to be removed from the list at a later date, you can simply notify us the same way.

Earth Day Clean-Up

We’ve got a plan in the works. If you’d like to be a part of the committee we’d love to have you join our meetings. We’re cleaning up our neighborhoods on the weekend of April 24-25, in lieu of Earth Day.

Earth Day Clean Up East Missoula United

We’ll have a dumpster available (in the Burnich parking lot), as well as some recycling options. If you are able to help with the logistics of these things please holler. The main thing we need is for you to spread the word! We would love to have the neighborhood bustling with people pitching in. Can you mark your calendar? Would you share these dates with your neighbor(s)? We would be so grateful.

Our friends at Hellgate Canyon Storage have graciously offered to sponsor this event. If you have interest in being a sponsor too, please let us know. We are looking for all of the support we can get.

Please contact us with any questions and/or if you’d like to be part of the planning committee. We would love your input and assistance. We will have a few Zoom meetings leading up to the event – you are welcome to join them. Message us for a link.

Sponsorship Options

We appreciate the enthusiasm we’ve received as we’ve been attempting to get the word out about East Missoula United.

We’ve got options for sponsorship in place, but we want to make sure you become a member before anything else. Please follow this link to set up your East Missoula United Membership.

We’ll be accepting sponsorships as we attempt to get our 501c3 status off the ground. We’ll be using donations for mailings, events, (eg: decorating the park over the 2021 holiday season) and filing our paperwork for our non-profit status (which is quite spendy). Oh, and one day hopefully to paint our water tower.

The instructions for donation are a bit tricky, but we wanted to be sure you could make them tax-deductible if you desired to. Please read carefully below and contact us if you have any problems or questions. Thank you in advance for your support.

Sponsorship instructions: In order to ensure your donation is delivered to EMU please carefully follow these instructions.

Follow this link to M.I.C.’s webpage. When you’ve arrived you’ll scroll down slightly to a box reading *My donation is for…* with a dropdown arrow. Please be sure to select ‘East Missoula United’ to ensure your donation comes to the right place.

Sponsorship Options:

1. Every Bit Helps – no limit – You’ll be one of our founding members and we appreciate your contribution to our neighborhood events and mailers.

2. I’m a Great Big Neighborhood Helper – $20-$49 – We’ll give you a shout out on our East Missoula United FB page, if you’d like. We appreciate your contribution to getting our organization off the ground.

3. I’m a Super Duper Neighborhood Helper – $50-$99+ – We’ll give you a shout out in our monthly newsletter and on our FB page, if you like. We appreciate your contribution to getting our organization off the ground.

4. Institutional Member – $100 (or more) – I’m an East Missoula business owner and I support this organization and look forward to collaborations in the future. We will put your logo and a thank you in our first e-news letter and shout out to you on our Facebook Page.

We appreciate your donations and support, even if it isn’t in a monetary form. We look forward to working with you and meeting all of you, in person, in the near future. Thank you!

A special thank you to Missoula Interfaith Collaborative as they’ve graciously offered to accept tax-deductible donations on our behalf.

No More Storage Units

You might remember the first project we worked on in October of 2020. The County Commissioners met to make a decision on some new zoning in the Ole’s parking lot. Ole’s is right in the center of our small community. There are residents facing that lot and we already have too many storage units out here. Our community didn’t want more.

We took action spreading the word throughout our community to stop this zoning from being passed. A petition was created, a FB page for an extra element of communication and our core group of action takers formed.

East Missoulians united and were able to collaborate with the masses in our community and have a profound impact at the Commissioners’ meeting. The commissioners decided to deny the zoning request. We had a win in the midst of a pandemic and election season where things were feeling bleak.

We have big dreams for our community and uniting everyone. We’re doing it as East Missoula United. Join us!

Light Our Tree

We have big dreams to decorate the big crooked tree in 2021. We’d love to have a big community event with hot cocoa, cranberry stringing, peanut butter pinecone decorating and a bonfire. We’re hoping our East Missoula Fire Department might be able to assist with the hard to reach places.

East Missoula Crooked Tree 2021
Here she is, in all her glory.

We spent some time doing a trial run event on the winter solstice 12/2020 and we were pleased with the results. Now we need to ask our community for holiday light donations. That big crooked tree is going to need a lot of lights. Special thank you to the Lion’s Club for letting us use the power at the pavilion to bring some holiday cheer.

Here are some photos from our sweet trial run event. You should go visit in person. It will make you smile.

You’ll find our donation station when you visit the park, we’d love new light donations, if you are able.

Happy Holidays from all of us at East Missoula United!
